Good news for all trail running enthusiasts suffering from post ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun blues, entries for the 2014 ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance will open on Thursday, 02 May 2013. Even better news is that the event will once again take place in March, which means you are already one month closer to the experience of a lifetime.
According to Nicola Collins, ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun Race Director, the positive feedback received after the 2013 event has been overwhelming. “The move to the new venue at the Houw Hoek Inn proved to be a great decision with runners embracing the new routes, facilities and the overall vibe. With Easter and the Two Oceans being later in 2014, we have been able to move the event back to its original date as used in 2012. While we won’t be implementing major route changes, slight changes will be made to ensure the best possible experience for all. Although 2013 was the best AfricanX to date, we will endeavour to reach even greater heights in 2014,” says Collins. DATE: 14 - 16 March 2014 FORMAT: Three-day stage race / teams of two (male/female/mixed) VENUE: Festival Village on the grounds of the Houw Hoek Inn DISTANCE: Between 25km – 38km each day ENTRIES OPEN: Thursday, 02 May 2013 There are three entry options: 1. Kane Reilly and Nicholas Rupanga of Team Salomon set a blistering pace during Stage One of the much anticipated ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance in the beautiful Elgin, Grabouw area on Friday, 19 April 2013.
According to Reilly they felt really good on the day. “We took it fairly slow for the first 15km, before breaking away with Michael Bailey and Ben Brimble, with whom we were very evenly matched. Today’s route wasn’t very tough and featured nice ups and downs. Nicholas and I go way back, he use to take me to the track. It is nice to finally get the chance to run with him. Our strategy for Stage Two will be to stick with the lead guys and not let anyone get away,” says Reilly. Team Salomon completed the 31km route in an impressive time of 02hours15minutes46seconds. Michael Bailey and Ben Brimble of Team ProNutro ASSICS came in second, while AJ Calitz and Nic De Beer of Team KWay Vivo Gu finished third. Ronel Nattrass and Kathleen Shuttleworth of Team Mizuno were the ladies team to beat on the day crossing the finish line in 02hours45minutes28seconds. For Nattrass the team dynamic worked well on the day. “We had a solid run today, pacing ourselves well. The route was fairly easy except for the surprise just before the finish. The competition has definitely become tougher since last year,” says Nattrass. Theresa Fourie and Belinda Noades of Team Columbia came in second, while Chantel Nienaber and Kerry Sillifant of Team Running Wild finished third. In the mixed category husband and wife duo Landie and Christiaan Greyling of Team ION Salomon had an impressive race claiming the top spot on the podium in a deserving time of 02hours37minutes32seconds. “We had an amazing run today,” says Landie. “My partner was really helpful and that’s just what it’s about in a team event. We had loads of fun and the route was just perfect. Tomorrow we’ll just take it easy and see how the legs feel”. Iain and Su Don-Wauchope of Team Mountain Splendour came in second, while Carla Van Huyssteen and Marc Price of Team Troisport Supermassive finished third. Stage Two: Date: Saturday, 20 April 2013 Distance: 33km Total Ascent: 900m Water Points: Four in total (on the 7.5km, 14.4km, 16.4km and 24km mark) Start Venue: Ongegund Finish Venue: Oude Molen Brandy Distillery Family and friends will also be able to support the athletes at various vantage points along the route.
According to Hendrico Burger, Route Designer, although the shortest of the three days, runners will need to reserve some energy as they will be in for a fair amount of climbing over the 24 kilometre route. “Stage Three will start at the Paul Cluver Amphitheatre with runners heading out towards the game enclosure. To spread the field out a bit the route will take runners on a short section through the famous Paul Cluver apple trees before joining the single tracks of Oak Valley. From here runners will climb to the foot of the Groenlandberg Mountain Range. Although the climb contains some fairly steep sections, runners do not need to worry about it being too technical. On a positive note the climb will lead runners to a contour where they’ll be met with a spectacular view of the Elgin/Grabouw Valley. Runners can then enjoy running through some famous Cape Fynbos before starting the final decent back to the Houw Hoek Inn. The decent will be gradual and non-technical, allowing runners the chance to relax and soak in the final few kilometres of the 2013 ProNutro AfricanX journey,” says Burger. Teamwork forms an essential part of the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance.
