The Overberg is a beautiful Region in the Western Cape of South Africa, and back when the first settlers came to the Cape and started to explore the inland of South Africa, the Overberg was fortunate to be protected by surrounding mountains making it very difficult for explores to reach, as the only way was to travel over the mountain and so came the name Overberg (over the mountain).
Today travelling from Cape Town you have two options of reaching the Overberg. The beautiful Clerence drive also known as the Whale Coast Route.
A Steep Coastal Route starting from Gordon’s Bay with the most beautiful and scenic views passing small villages like Rooi Els, Pringle Bay, Betty’s Bay (home to a colony of African penguins), and Kleinmond taking you all the way to Hermanus ,Whale watching capital of the world. Leaving you only with a short drive from Gansbaai where the Great White Sharks rule the waters.
The second route is the N2 highway through Sir Lowry’s Pass descending onto a beautiful countryside of orchards, Elgin Valley this area is well known for its production of Apples but is also one of South Africa’s biggest production areas for exporting fruit. Continuing you will find yourself surrounded by Wheatfield’s, grazing sheep and Cattle and magnificent views of the Riviersonderend Mountain, this route takes you pass towns like Grabouw, Caledon, Riviersonderend and Swellendam, and make sure to keep an eye out for our National Bird the Blue Crane while in this area as they are very popular in the region.
The Overberg has a diverse of attractions; there is something for everyone, the Nature Lovers, Historians, Adrenaline Junkies and even the ones with a hunger for exploring diverse culture cultures. And don’t forget that the Overberg is also home to the most southern point of Africa, Cape L’Agulhas and were the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meets and together they create the stormy water for which the Cape has been famous for centuries and even given the nick name ‘Kaap van Storms’ ‘Cape of Storms’ and some ships who have dared these waters still remain lost till this day.
