Reigning men’s champion Michael Lord took no prisoners on Saturday, 23 February 2013 completing the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Grabouw Lite presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT in a mind blowing time of 01hours07minutes57seconds. Carla Beyers was the women’s champion on the day with an impressive finishing time of 01hours26minutes11seconds. According to Lord the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Lite is exactly what a triathlon should be like. “The route is really nice. The mountain bike is fast while the run is rough, challenging and fun. It’s a proper run course. I was hoping to run the entire run course with my dog, Shenzi, but my mom didn’t hear me. So she only let Shenzi go on the last part of the run course. I’ll definitely be back next year,” says Lord. Matthew Lombardi came in second, while Dawie Carstens finished third. “The TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Lite is definitely much easier than the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Full,” laughs Beyers. “Today’s race was fantastic, hardcore to the end. I enjoyed it so much, it is so beautiful. The best word I can think of to describe the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA is Gees. I’ll definitely like to take part in TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Full again next year,” says Beyers. Marguerite Van Niekerk came in second, while Deleen-Marie Steyn finished third. XTERRA Warriors taking part in the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Grabouw Lite presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT had to complete a 400m swim followed by a 12km mountain bike and finally a 5km trail run. TOTALSPORTS XTERRA KIDS Just over 100 XTERRA warriors in the making were seen in action in Grabouw on Friday, 22 February 2013 at the inaugural TOTALSPORTS XTERRA KIDS presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT. According to Caroline Wyatt, Organiser of the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA KIDS Race, the turn out on the day was phenomenal. “Today’s event was a huge success. I spoke to a number of the parents afterwards and they said that their children are raving about the event and cannot wait for the next one. We made sure that the route was challenging enough, but not too long as most of the children have never been off-road. We definitely want to grow the event, but most probably with a limit of 250 entrants. Eventually it would be great to have a series. The TOTALSPORTS XTERRA KIDS Race is purely about enjoyment. We aim to expose children to a different, healthier way of life,” says Wyatt. DON’T MISS the action of the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Grabouw Full presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT on Sunday, 24 February 2013. Starting at 08:30, spectators can look forward to seeing the best of the best in action including the likes of four time XTERRA World Champion Conrad Stoltz, Dan Hugo, Stuart Marais, Olympian Richard Murray, Carla Van Huyssteen, Carina Wasle (Austria) and Shonny Vanlandingham (Durango, Colorado) to mention just a few. XTERRA Warriors taking part in the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Grabouw Full presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT will need to complete a 1.5km swim, 27km mountain bike and 11km trail run. It is once again an honour welcoming Dave Nicholas, Managing Director of the XTERRA World Tour, to the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Grabouw presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT. According to Nicholas, Olympian Richard Murray will most definitely be the dark horse going into Sunday’s race. “When coming from a road background, the triathlete is usually tentative on the mountain bike discipline. Richard Murray, however, originally comes from a mountain bike background so it’s going to be interesting watching him in action,” says Nicholas. Just over 200 trail running enthusiasts could once again be part of the action at the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Grabouw presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT on Saturday, 23 February 2013 by taking part in either a fun 5km or challenging 11km New Balance Trail Run presented by ISUZU. Eduardo Ordax (Spain) set the pace in the 11km men’s race, while Landie Greyling was the lady to beat on the day.
According to Ordax, he was pleasantly surprised by the 11km route. “I’ve taken part in many races in Spain, but none of them come close to today’s race, it was amazing. There was a nice balance of hills, sand, a river crossing and flat sections. It was beautiful, one of the best races that I’ve ever taken part in,” says Ordax, completing the 11km race in a well deserved 46minutes02seconds. Anele Mnukwa came in second, while Asmus Zoch finished third. After completing the 11km New Balance Trail Run presented by ISUZU, Landie Greyling has new found respect for XTERRA Warriors taking on the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Grabouw Full presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT on Sunday. “Your legs already feel like jelly after the mountain bike discipline and then to take on the run directly afterwards, I take my hat off to the XTERRA Warriors. I tried taking it easy today, but Ronel Nattrass gave me a go. Today’s route was absolutely world class. Stillwater Sport once again put on a superb event. You cannot ask for a better route in this distance. I’ll definitely be back next year,” says Greyling, completing the 11km race in a deserving time of 54minutes02secons. Ronel Nattrass came in second, while Harpur Hayley finished third. Alex Weusch was victorious in the men’s 5km New Balance Trail Run presented by ISUZU with an impressive winning time of 32minutes04seconds. Pieter Van De Merwe came in second, while Fred King finished third. Stefanie Cherry took gold in the women’s 5km New Balance Trail Run presented by ISUZU with a winning time of 35minutes01seconds. Amy Stevens came in second, while Nicolette Shelly finished third. The 5km and 11km New Balance Trail Run routes followed the exact same routes as that of the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Lite (Saturday, 23 February 2013) and TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Full (Sunday, 24 February 2013) respectively. Trail Runners were given the unique opportunity to experience spectacular routes that are inaccessible to mountain bikers. Initially given the opportunity to stretch their legs, but it wasn’t too long before the ‘scramble’ started. After the main climb and the following descent, the trail run brought athletes along the shores of the Eikenhof Dam, back to the finish line into the much deserved REHIDRAT SPORT Recovery Zone. EVENT INFORMATION: New Balance Trail Run presented by ISUZU Date: Saturday, 23 February 2013 Venue: Grabouw Country Club (Western Cape) Distance: 5km and 11km Start Time: 07:00 EXCITING NEWS: As Eduardo Ordax was the first 11km athlete to cross the finish line on the day he has also secured himself an entry into South Africa’s most exciting three day stage trail run, the ProNutro AfricanX Trailrun presented by New Balance. Olympian Richard Murray and reigning XTERRA SA champion Carla Van Huyssteen were on fire in Elgin Grabouw (Western Cape) on Sunday, 24 February 2013 at the TOTALSPORTS XTERRA South African Championship presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT completing the 1.5km swim, 27km mountain bike and 11km trail run first in the men’s and women’s category in combined times of 02hours23minutes02seconds and 02hours51minutes01seconds respectively.
According to Murray this is his best performance by far in South Africa. “This is my first South African title. I swam with Tim Don, exiting the water seconds behind him and only 25 seconds ahead of Conrad Stoltz. I was uncertain going into the bike and really expected Conrad to catch me sooner. It was only on the 10km mark that he caught me and then proceeded to pull away. He just has so much power in his legs. I was about 30 or 40 seconds behind Conrad coming into transition and managed to pull him about half way through the run. From there I just kept it together till the end. It was a big day for me. I’ve wanted this win for the last 3 to 4 years. The Totalsports XTERRA is definitely the most contended race in South Africa. I had so much fun and will definitely be back next year,” says Murray. An event official reported that Stoltz deviated from the run route and as a result official rules had to be applied and Stoltz had to be disqualified. Dan Hugo therefore took second place on the day, with Nico Pfitzenmaier finishing third. For Van Huyssteen the successful title defence was a-dream-come true. “I had to work hard the entire race,” says Van Huyssteen. “The swim was a bit chaotic in the beginning with me choosing the wrong line. I still had a good swim though, entering transition first. I knew I had to work hard as Shonny Vanlandingham is an amazing mountain biker. I managed to find good rhythm on the bike. Going into the run I knew I had to give my all as my husband wouldn’t be impressed with me if it looked like I was taking it easy,” laughs Van Huyssteen. “Today’s race was great. I had a knot in my stomach the whole way as I really wanted this win”. Susan Sloan came in second, while Shonny Vanlandingham (Durango, Colorado) finished third. Reigning men’s and women’s Champions Conrad Stoltz and Carla Van Huyssteen will face a battle of note on Sunday, 24 February 2013 when they return to the Elgin Grabouw Country Club (Western Cape) to state their claim on yet another victory at the much anticipated TOTALSPORTS XTERRA South African Championship presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT.
According to Stoltz, TOTALSPORTS XTERRA Grabouw is by far his favourite local XTERRA. “Grabouw possesses sentimental value as that is where we had our first South African XTERRA in 2004, but of course I love Grabouw the most because of the hard core route. The mountain bike discipline is one of the few in the world that has a good amount of real connoisseurs' single track. I believe that the growth of the sport of XTERRA in South Africa can be attributed to the winning recipe of a great course, great venue, flawless organisation and the extensive TV and media coverage that it receives. Dan Hugo will predictably be my toughest competitor on the day, but I'm really excited about the "up-and-coming” athletes who have made big improvements this past season. Stuart Marais, Bradley Weiss, Theo Blignaut and Tyronne White will make for spectacular racing. Richard Murray, our 2012 Triathlon Olympian will make a cameo appearance. It will be interesting to see how he does in the dirt. Taking part in XTERRA is the dream lifestyle. You get to train for three sporting disciplines in the beautiful outdoors, you get to race your buddies on Grabouw's epic trails and afterwards we drink beer and hang out with friends,” says Stoltz. “I’m not sure who will be my toughest competition on the day,” says Van Huyssteen. “The women’s competition is really heating up. I try not to focus on who else is racing to prevent myself from getting nervous, but I am sure the Gauteng girls will bring their “A” Game. Competitors can expect to work really hard the first half of the bike course as you climb out of the valley. You will however be rewarded with amazing views and single track as you head back down. The run has some steep climbs, but is also quick at the end so be sure to keep some in the legs to be able to go fast over the "beach" section”. Van Huyssteen will face tough competition in the form of Carina Wasle (Austria) and Shonny Vanlandingham (Durango, Colorado). Vanlandingham is in her fifth season of racing XTERRA where she has collected 15 championship victories including the 2010 XTERRA World Title. Prior to joining the XTERRA Vanlandingham was the most successful women's mountain biker in U.S. history with 15 NORBA National victories and was a seven-time member of the U.S. national team. Award-winning pianist and vocal artist Shannon Hope joins forces with the energetic and relatively new on the SA music scene Dividable Grand for Come Together – a show featuring a collaborative approach to their respective original songs and some songs they wish they wrote. Imagine the vocal power of Adele backed by the pop sensibilities of The Beatles – throw in a cello, some percussion and appearances by a couple of well-known guest artists, and Come Together will be a performance to remember. Shannon Hope is described as “a thrilling, enthralling, endearing and awe-inspiring performer”, and with two full studio albums, radio play on various stations across the country, and a reputation as one of the hardest-touring artists in South Africa, she has graced esteemed stages such as the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town and The Metro Theatre in Chicago, and almost every major festival on the national circuit. In 2011 she was awarded a Standard Bank Ovation Award by the National Arts Festival in recognition of “artistic innovation, excellence, the exploitation of new performance styles and the courage to open new conversations in the arts.” And opening new conversations is exactly what Shannon Hope has in mind for 2013. Come Together also features the musical talents of Dividable Grand. Their debut album “The Buzz” was released in October 2012 and has received extensive airplay on stations like KFM, RSG, ECR and numerous campus radio stations in South Africa. They have shared stages with the likes of Prime Circle, Karen Zoid, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Ard Matthews – much to the crowd’s delight. Genevieve Vieira of The Citizen had this to say about the band: “For a band made up solely of 18-year-olds, The Buzz is what many would consider well above average as far as debut albums are concerned. The album is altogether enjoyable and distinguished, with an impressive sense of creativity oozing through the music. Excitement builds knowing that any future offerings hold great potential.” Come Together Tour Dates: Friday, 22 February 2013 Seabrooke’s Theatre at DHS, Durban (255 St Thomas Road, Musgrave, Durban. According to Johan Kriegler, a W2W Director, since its inception in 2009 W2W has supported various beneficiaries. “W2W is one of the most successful MTB events in South Africa. We’ve supported Rotary and Round Table Clubs, De Rust Futura and Botriver Schools, Botriver Educational Foundation, songo.info and the Boland Cape Leopard Trust. As W2W is about cycling we also wanted to assist schools in enabling wider sporting choices. BMX’s are sturdy bikes that are easy to maintain and loads of fun to do tricks with, making them ideal for children. Our vision is to establish BMX, a popular Olympic sport, as a school sport in poorer communities on the W2W route and the Southern Cape Villages of Riviersonderend, Riversdale, Swellendam, Groot Brak, George and Knysna. In partnership with local municipalities we plan to build BMX Pump Tracks at these schools. The Thandi BMX Track, different from a much smaller BMX Pump Track, is sure to become a popular inter school competition venue. ASLA Construction is sponsoring a container in which the BMX’s are to be stored at De Rust Futura, while Euodia Cycles, one of the W2W official mechanical partners, will co-ordinate the maintenance of the BMX’s,” says Kriegler. The Pedal Power Association is the largest cycling organization in the Western Cape, and the biggest provincial cycling body in the country. It currently has some 19 000 paid-up members. “We are in the fortunate position that the Pedal Power Association and the Rotary Club of Claremont are the beneficiaries of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, who organises, amongst others, the annual Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour. The PPA uses any profits received in this way to run the Association, with over R1,85 million having been ploughed into cycling between 2011 – 2012,” explains PPA Chairman, Steve Hayward. “Over the years it has been important to the PPA to assist cyclists in previously disadvantaged and rural areas, not only from a commuting perspective, but also to use cycling as a means of life skills development; to foster a healthy lifestyle, or as a sport. To this end, the PPA spends the largest portion of its project funding on cycling development and junior riders. In this funding year, the Association will be supporting fifteen development clubs and two rural Foundations with specific projects. PPA has been a keen W2W partner from the start, co-funding some of the routes which have successfully been opened to the public. PPA also co-funded the BMX Track at Thandi, which was completed in 2011. One of the reasons for building the track at Thandi was to enable the De Rust Futura school kids to use it. W2W and PPA have both contributed financially toward getting the BMX’s, helmets and tools to the children, while some funds have been reserved for the future maintenance of these bicycles”.
