Niel Jonker presents “The Artisan” HOSTED AT WHALEHAVEN ARTISAN WINERY #HermanusFynarts 20145/27/2014 From the 1st – 30th June, multidisciplinary sculptor Niel Jonker will be hosted at
Whalehaven winery for a solo exhibition called “The Artisan”. The exhibition will be held during a key month for art in the Hermanus area, with a host of events being developed from the 6th-16th June for the 2014 Hermanus FynArts Festival. Sculpture in South Africa has taken off due to the collector status of works by Dylan Lewis, Angus Taylor, Conrad Hicks and Bronze Age. In the Overberg region, there are 3 distinctive sculptors shaping desire for collectors to support the artistic form: Niel Jonker, Willie Botha and Noel Ashton. Distinguishing features of Niel Jonker include an impressionistic and expressive markmaking ability that sets his style apart and has resulted in various commissions for public sculpture in South Africa and inclusions in collections local and abroad. Niel Jonker speaks of his works “For me, these bronzes are emotional pieces which form part of a selection of the best of my life’s work to date including old world fine sculptures of the human form and my new modernist passion for capturing the changing earth landscape into a permanent cast. The rare editions of figurative bronze sculpture are bound by a momentary pause in time, lending them a graceful and timeless quality, while exploring the nature of beauty through the classical sculptural approach of naturalistic rendering.” The artist is showcasing a body of work bringing together the human form and renditions of the ever-changing earth. The large format pieces stand as a testament to his unwavering dedication to represent the human anatomy and the earth in an emotional manner. The combination brings together, much like the vernacular of wine, the element of terroir, vines and how man works to extract the best possible grapes from the soil that are then transformed through the fine craft of wine-making. In recent pieces, Jonker has cast earth on location in the Overberg to incorporate the site’s significance into the sculpture. The artist matriculated with a distinction in art and graduated from Natal Technikon in 1993 with distinctions in painting and sculpture during which time, in 1991, he was awarded the most promising student award from Foundation Art School, Cape Town, presented by Judith Mason.1988 THE WINERY Whalehaven Artisan Winery has recently been redesigned using various artisans from Southern Africa, including Aidan Bennetts who has created unique vases, Martin Doller who created lights out of crystal decanters, Andrew Dominic who executed a masterful table with inlaid bronze and chairs by Guideline MNF.
