Lourensford Wine Estate (Somerset West) was buzzing with activity this morning (Friday, 02 November 2012) when 1200 excited mountian bikers lined up for the start of Stage One of the Contego Wines2Whales MTB Adventure powered by Maserati.
David Cooke and Tom Wetton of Team Suunto Ambit powered to victory in the men’s team category completing the 69km route in a deserving 04hours15minutes14seconds. According to Cooke the stage was absolutely fantastic. “The marking was great and the single track was just phenomenal. We decided to take part in the Wines2Whales Adventure as it’s more relaxed and fun, however we still ended up pushing ourselves. There were approximately four teams pushing hard at the front of the bunch. It was only at the portage section of Gantouw Pass that we were able to breakaway. This is such a great race with exciting obstacles,” says Cooke. Team Continental Biscuits came in second, while Team Rehidrat finished third. Team Bonteboks’ Lisa and Brian Bontekoning were the mixed team to beat on the day, crossing the finish line in a time of 05hours09minutes41seconds. According to Lisa this is the first time that she and Brian don’t particpate as a tandem team. “After the 2011 Wines2Whales Adventure there were so many riders raving about this event that we just had to take part this year. The route was so much fun and the riders are so polite,” says Lisa. Team Bruce Reyneke Cycles SOAR came in second, while Team Eagles Cliff Wines finished third. Kim De Villiers and Glynnis Byron of Team Smart Tarts were the first women’s team home on the day crossing the finish line in 05hours36minutes28seconds. According to De Villiers the route was absolutely fabulous. “I loved the route. This is the third year that I participate and each year the route is changed and made more interesting. I really had a lot of fun,”says De Villiers. Team NH The Lord Charles came in second, while Team Stage Virgins finished third.
